Trailhead
December 18, 2013
This 22-acre parcel was given to USVLT in December of 2013 by the heirs of Eric G. Sandquist. The property has 1,600 feet of frontage on the Wildcat River — one of only two federally designated Wild & Scenic Rivers in New Hampshire — and contains intact floodplain forest with historic flood channels and excellent wildlife habitat. The property borders the Wildcat River on the west, and to the north, east and south, the property is surrounded by 215 additional acres of conserved land held by the Wildcat River Trust. As this 215-acre parcel is, in turn, contiguous with the White Mountain National Forest, the Sandquist parcel forms part of a large, intact “conservation block” in the Wildcat River Valley.
Winter Access
- A downloadable trail map is available HERE.
- The preserve is located just west of the Wildcat Valley Ski Trail. While there are no trails on the property, the understory of the forest is relatively open and winter visitors may enjoy bushwacking from the ski trail to the banks of the peaceful and scenic Wildcat Brook.
- The easiest way to access USVLT’s Sandquist Preserve is along the Wildcat Valley Ski Trail, which originates at Melloon Road in Jackson and heads south along the eastern boundary of the preserve.
- The Wildcat Valley Ski Trail is only accessible to pass holders of the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation during the winter
- All winter users of the Wildcat Valley Ski Trail must follow the rules of use of the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation. Visit jacksonxc.org for more info.
- When heading south along the trail one will see USVLT property markers approx. 1.2km after leaving from the trailhead. In the winter it is an easy bushwack to the Preserve and Wildcat Brook from this point.
