The 100-acre Burnell property in Bartlett abuts the 515-acre Merriman State Forest and the 16-acre Osgood property, that, along with the adjacent 38-acre Mt Surprise Preserve, adds to a significant block of conservation land important for wide-ranging species and ecological processes. The property hosts part of the Mt. Surprise Trail network. It is protected with a working forest easement that allows for the sustainable production of forest products, and also helps protect the watershed and associated wetlands of Eben Abbott and Wheeler Brooks.
The Burnell easement is consistent with Bartlett’s Master Plan which states:
“Of paramount importance … continues to be the protection of our water resources and our open or forested spaces.”
